My Story
Responsibility comes early when you are 2nd of 12 kids. Four of my brothers and one of my sisters were adopted, some with severe special needs. At the age of 15, when many boys were wondering if they would make the sports team, I was pulling long nights with a three year old on a feeding tube. But these kinds of responsibilities instilled in me compassion for all kinds of people.
Graduating Calvin University in 2009 (and having loved it), I was freshly married and on my way to seminary. But God had another direction for me, and after a few years of plumbing, HVAC and contracting, I caught the dream of becoming a farmer. We moved to Newaygo County in 2013 and founded Provision Family Farms. Over the years, we’ve fed thousands of customers naturally raised meats.
Then, before COVID, I began regular contracting work flipping houses and started to intentionally hire unemployed men without hope. I gave them employment, encouragement and help to get some life skills. I believe that work is dignity, and self-esteem cannot be given, only earned.
Today I continue farming and flipping houses. I enjoy reading to my kids and gaming with them. I serve in my church as a leader of a boys group. I am so thankful for my country, my family and my God and can only say:
“God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever” – Psalm 73:26
Through all my life, I am sustained and driven by my relationship with my God, and supported by my wife and family. I appreciate your prayer and support also as I seek to become a public servant
